Shade Stucture
The goal was simple, to create an installation that improves the area around it. This was
assigned to me at a week-long architecture camp at Virginia Tech. I chose a quad, with
a food court, dorms, and a volleyball net. I noticed the center was empty. This gave me the
problem to solve; provide seating and shade through a beautiful structure. I positioned
two trees purposefully to shade half the seating. The other half was shaded by a sail. Because of its
proximity to dorms, I added a small grassy knoll molded like a chair, perfect to lay on. I
added two benches next to eachother for the volleyball courts. In this quad I realized there was a distinct lack of quiet places to sit and read
outside, to solve that I added a more enclosed bench, perfect for reading outside or
having a deep conversation. When it comes to it’s actual creation, I imagine the general structure would be made of a light grey mortar, textured
slightly to resemble Hokie stone. Hokie stone is the primary material used in the surrounding area. It’s important that it would
still be flat enough to lean back against. I imagined the pole to be maroon, like a beacon of
school spirit. The model utilizes paper and cardboard, held together with tape and glue.
